Sedation Dentistry

Experience Total Relaxation at Expressions Dental

Does the thought of a trip to the dentist make you anxious? You’re not alone. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, as many as 40 million Americans avoid dental visits because of fear. At Expressions Dental, we understand your apprehension and offer modern methods to help you relax and get the care you need.

Sedation dentistry is an FDA-approved technique that involves anxiety-reducing medication. We offer several options for sedation including, nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral conscious relaxation, and IV sedation. Our doctors will carefully examine your medical history and oral status to determine which method will benefit you. We will also thoroughly explain exactly what to expect while receiving sedation dentistry.

Common Questions about Sedation Dentistry

Will I be “put under”?

Patients are not completely “knocked out.” Instead, you will be sedated just enough to experience total relaxation, while still being able to respond to the doctor. Retrograde amnesia is common with sedation dentistry, which means that you will remember very little from the actual procedure.

Is sedation safe?

Yes. Sedation dentistry under the supervision of a qualified dental professional is absolutely safe. The medications we use are backed by time-tested research. We carefully examine your medical history and evaluate your risk factors before administering sedation. While under sedation, we will monitor your vital signs and comfort level to ensure your safety.

Will I be able to drive?

That depends on the kind of sedation you receive. Our doctors will give you specific instructions that relate to the method of sedation dentistry we recommend. Generally, patients who receive nitrous oxide are able to drive after their appointment. A friend or family member must drive you if you receive any additional anesthesia.

Our passion is helping people get the strong, healthy smiles they deserve. If you have any questions about sedation dentistry, don’t hesitate to call us. The Expressions Dental team will be happy to help.
